Gaeta is a city with a long history, located in a strategic area between Rome and Naples, close to significant historical and cultural sites. The city’s first settlements date back to the 8th century BC, and from 345 BC, under Roman influence, it became a holiday destination for wealthy Roman families. Many traces of that period remain, including the highly interesting Mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus and that of Lucius Sempronius Atratinus. There are also remains of bastions, walls, and ancient gates from that period. In the ancient village of Sant’Erasmo are the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum, and the Cathedral bell tower in Arab-Moorish style. Worth seeing are the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, the Golden Grotto, the Churches of San Giovanni a Mare, San Domenico, Santa Lucia, and San Francesco, among others. The Sanctuary of the Montagna Spaccata is famous, where you can admire the famous split in the mountain; Furthermore, a nature trail on Monte Orlando guides tourists to discover the local fauna and flora. Gaeta boasts picturesque streets and alleys, brimming with local aromas and flavors, and an interesting culinary tradition driven primarily by fishing. The sea is clearly a major draw, with the beautiful Serapo beach and the numerous beaches and coves between Gaeta and Sperlonga.
